Cherry Banana Protein Smoothie with Coconut Oil

Need a quick, handy breakfast or snack?  This cherry banana coconut oil protein smoothie is naturally sweet and delicious, and can be whipped up in a hurry!  It actually tastes kind of tropical to me, which doesn’t make a lot of sense because cherries grow in the US…  I guess it’s the banana and hint of coconut.  Or maybe it’s the simple fact that winter is slowly melting into a soupy puddle of spring, and I wish I was in Florida!  For now, I’ll have to be satisfied with this smoothie to fill my *tropical* cravings.

I used to think a smoothie meant frozen fruit, milk and a sweetener blended together, but that simple formula doesn’t cut it for me anymore.  Now I realize that to keep me satisfied until the next meal, a smoothie needs protein!  This cherry banana coconut oil smoothie has vanilla protein powder in it to build muscle and ward off cravings until lunch.  The kind I use, Progressive Organics Brown Rice Vanilla Protein, has stevia powder and natural vanilla in it so it adds a touch of sweetness to smoothies without being overpowering.  (Trust me, I would never reccommend anything that has a strong stevia flavour!)  I love this protein powder!  Since I’m sensitive to dairy, I’m afraid to waste money on whey protein when I probably can’t tolerate it, so I’m thankful that vegan options like Progressive Organics are available.

I get mine for a good price in a local health food store, but for those of you in the US, Amazon will ship it to you from Canada.  However, if you do live in the states, I would recommend that you find a similar organic brown rice vanilla protein powder that is locally available in a store, for a better price!  However, if you prefer to shop online, feel free to click any of the links above to go to Amazon and search for a cheaper kind.  I’d really appreciate if you do choose to purchase through the link, even if you find a different product, as I will earn a small commission on any sales generated by the link.  I’m just getting started with affiliate links, and I don’t have everything figured out yet.  I’ll be setting up an affiliate program with amazon.ca shortly, so I can offer links for Canadian viewers as well.  I’m really hoping this will help me cover some of the costs of running Kelsey’s Kreative Korner, but I will never endorse product that I can’t honestly recommend.  Thank you for your support!

Now, back to the smoothie…  All over the internet, food bloggers are singing the praises of green smoothies, kale smoothies, spinach smoothies and otherwise vegetable smoothies!  “Throw leafy green stuff into your blender and pour out a delicious, healthy dessert!” they tell us.  Um, wow…  Who are we kidding?  That sounds like a salad without the dressing, blended into baby puree!!!  But the health benefits these smoothies boast do sound appealing, so I decided to give it a try.  I blended kale and froze it in ice cube trays, all cute and ready for smoothies!  (More about that in a later post.)  I knew I had to try this green smoothie thing sometime, but I knew I could never so it without cleverly disguising it somehow.  So, I took my favourite cherry banana coconut oil protein smoothie and subbed in a kale cube for some of the cherries.  It was still perfectly delicious!  Success!!!  Now when I make this smoothie, I put 3 kale cubes in a 10oz mug, and fill the rest of it with frozen dark cherries (unsweetened), all ready to blend with the rest of the ingredients.  Feel free to adjust this according to your taste and preference though!  I hope you enjoy this healthy not-green protein smoothie as much as I do! 🙂

Recipe Notes

This smoothie is positively delicious!  I used to make it with only 1/2 a scoop of protein powder, and no kale, which my brother and I LOVED!  Now I add 3 "ice cubes" of frozen kale and use the full scoop of protein powder for an extra health boost, which is still a yummy way to start the day... I'm just not sure if this version would pass with my brother! 😉
